Soon after Bharti Airtel and Aircel announced the price of the iPhone 4S in India on their websites, Indians took to social media to express their disapproval at its rate (Rs 44,500) – costlier than anywhere else in the world. Twitter and Facebook went abuzz with comments deriding the smartphone maker Apple. Even though the device is made available at a 10% cheaper rate on sites like eBay, Indians are still unhappy with it. On the contrary, in the US, the iPhone 4S retails at 35% less than the official price announced in India.
As a matter of fact, all Apple products are priced significantly higher in India as compared to other countries like the US, Singapore & Hong Kong.
The Economic Times reported that the warranty for iPhone 4S will be valid only in the country in which the phone is purchased. The 32-GB iPhone 4S will cost Rs 50,900 while the high-end with 64 GB comes at Rs 57,500. The lowest priced iPhone 4S at Rs 44,500 comes with 16 GB memory.
"Most customers who wanted the 4S are internet savvy. They took price cues from other markets. For instance in the US, the iPhone 4S was launched at the same price as the iPhone 4, while in most other countries, it was only marginally higher - hence the shock." said an industry executive who has been monitoring the response in India.
